Getting to grips with AWR

The Agency Workers Regulation came into effect on 1st October, however, there is a lot of uncertainty and ambiguity about how this will affect NFPs and what they need to do to comply. To help answer some of your key questions around AWR, we are partnering with leading third sector solicitors firm, Hempsons, to create a seminar that will clarify:

- What are the legal implications of AWR for your organisation?
- What do you need to do to prepare for the impact of AWR?
- What recruitment strategies can you employ to mitigate the impact of AWR?
- What to look for from your recruitment suppliers in respect of AWR?

AWR In Practice Seminar

"Grow your own": how to get a fundraising team that delivers

We recently ran an online survey to identify trends in fundraising recruitment. The research reveals that given the choice, 65% of not-for-profit organisations (NFPs) would prefer to develop an existing employee rather than offer a higher salary to get a fundraiser.

The majority of organisations believe there is a fundraising skills gap with almost half of respondents identifying Major Donor fundraising as experiencing the biggest shortfall.

However, instead of wanting to recruit for these fundraisers externally, NFPs are concentrating on developing talent in-house. Budgetary constraints do play a part in the reasoning for this but respondents also point out that the values of individual team members being closely aligned to that of the organisation is crucial. This provides a solid base to build upon, to which they can add the specific fundraising skills required via training, which in turn will motivate and retain staff.

Survey respondent Sarah Harington, Head of Fundraising & Communications at human rights organisation, INTERIGHTS said:

“We’re developing our fundraising team in-house rather than appointing additional fundraisers as we recognise that are we already have exceptional staff that believe in our mission. We want to motivate and retain these people, embedding those skills in the organisation.

David Lale, Founder and MD of Charity People said:

“It’s clear from the research that this time of austerity is impacting the recruitment of fundraisers. It’s not surprising that there is a new emphasis on non-profit organisations training and developing the team members they value to become talented fundraisers. This is truly the time to invest in the loyal staff these organisations employ.”

He adds “This is also somewhat of a wake up call to third sector recruitment agencies that NFPs are meeting the challenge of the fundraising skills gap by cultivating their own teams. We have to consider the long-term implications this has for the industry.”

Additional key findings of the research reveal that nearly 40% of organisations are more willing to consider employing fundraisers with indirect experience or from the corporate sector.

We're all ears!

We're very aware that the recent funding cuts have made fundraising a higher priority than ever before. This has an impact on the recruitment of fundraisers and we would like to hear your thoughts on the subject.

We are undertaking an online survey of HR and fundraising professionals to understand the key trends in recruiting good fundraisers, the various ways that organisations are tackling this challenge, which ones prove the most successful plus any future concerns.

The research results and analysis will be sent to all survey participants and for one randomly selected respondent we will donate £250 to the organisation of their choice.

Take the survey at:

We look forward to seeing your responses and if you have any questions about this research please contact us at marketing@peopleunlimited.co.uk

Jog on!

The People Unlimited team are donning their trainers and reflective lycra running leggings to take part in this year's Bupa 10,000 on Monday, 30th May. Perhaps not the most well trained of teams but we will be running, jogging, walking and crawling the 10k (that's just over 6.2 miles) in aid of the British Heart Foundation.

The BHF do invaluable research into how to combat and manage heart disease and they also offer support, advice and information to those living with or affected by heart disease.

So please donate to encourage David, Bianca, Ed, Paul, Guy, Neil and Debs to cross the finish line but also to help this important cause.

NO AMOUNT IS TOO SMALL - EVERY PENNY WILL HELP TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

Please help to motivate us by sponsoring the Speedy Gonzales!

Spring Cleaning forum3

With spring leading into the first hint of Summer, we’ve been reflecting on forum3 http://www.forum3.co.uk/, our recruitment and volunteering event for the NFP sector, and how with ten years under its belt we can make it even more successful and deepen the experience for all involved.

The way to do this well is to ask YOU, the exhibitors and the visitors, to give us your feedback. So we’re interested to know why you exhibit, who you’d like to see at event and what you’d like to get out of it.

So make your voice heard about what you’d like forum3 to be by taking a few minutes to complete this survey. You'll be entered into a draw and could win two free tickets (worth £400) to our first annual employer branding and employee engagement conference on 23/24th September at the Business Design Centre.

If you've already completed it, then you're already in the draw!

We are sailing!

Well not quite but we have recently supported the charity Sail 4 Cancer www.sail4cancer.org with a donation as our Chairman, David Lale, was unable to attend their Clipper City Challenge.

Sail 4 Cancer raises money through sailing and related activities to help improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their families. This is achieved mainly through the provision of respite days, the majority of which are linked to the water and its therapeutic powers.

As Graham Precey, Chair of Trustees of Sail 4 Cancer says “As I know you are aware, this donation will be used to help offer respite to people living with cancer and your support really does make a difference to their lives...”

We’re happy to help and hope their commendable work continues.

Big Society brings demand for Charity People return.

Charity People http://www.charitypeople.com/ the recruitment consultancy set up in 1990 to meet the needs of the third sector, is back. Although the brand Charity People has been away for a couple years, the work we do, recruiting and championing the sector as a desirable place to work, has always continued. In fact, in the last year demand for our services has increased so we decided the well-recognised Charity People brand should make a reappearance.

People Unlimited will become the group brand overseeing the recruitment specialist’s four lines of business - Charity People, People Unlimited Care, PURE Careers and forum3.

David Lale, Chairman of the People Unlimited group said the Prime Minister’s Big Society had created a clear opportunity for People Unlimited to reintroduce Charity People.

“The Big Society puts a greater reliance on charities to provide services for all, meaning they need to have the right skills on board to deliver their objectives. Charity People was a key recruiter for the sector during the 1990’s and is now coming back to fill an obvious gap in the market,” Mr Lale said.

And as attention turns to the Big Society, Charity People has launched V Temps, an innovative resourcing programme which matches people with temporary opportunities in the not-for-profit sector that are part-paid and part-volunteering.

Another Charity People initiative which ties in closely with one of the key principles of the Big Society doctrine is the SMaRT Scheme which sees corporate senior managers recruited as trustees. This scheme was developed as a way to create long lasting relationships between commercial and not-for-profit organisations. The SMaRT model essentially provides a vehicle to bring the skills of talented senior managers and directors onto the boards of not-for-profit organisations as Trustees for an agreed period. The scheme was successfully piloted with investment and insurance giant, Legal and General.

Paul Sais, Managing Director of the People Unlimited group said these two schemes show the wide scope of opportunities in the not-for-profit sector, and demonstrated how everyone could find ways to contribute to the Big Society.

“The Big Society creates a number of challenges for charities but also offers an opportunity for re-evaluation and identifying ways to work differently with the corporate sector. V Temps and the SMaRT Scheme are just two of our programmes which provide people with the opportunity to contribute to the not-for-profit sector and which also highlight a new approach to recruitment within the sector,” Mr Sais said.

There are 1.6m paid staff in the civil society with 668,000 of them working in the voluntary sector. 30.9m people volunteer (formally and informally) at least once a year. Source: NCVO Almanac 2010. These numbers are expected to grow in 2011 to meet an increased demand for services.
